CDS provides customized USAIP internship placement programs to international universities, university consortia, and other partner organizations with the goal of encouraging and enabling more students to gain practical experience in the United States. Each program places qualified student participants in 3-12 month internships with U.S. host companies, and provides an individualized program timeframe, in-county orientation, and personalized service to each program partner. In order to be eligible, applicants must be current students or recent graduates affilated with the program partner. The program fee is $1,000 per participant.

This program is administered under the auspices of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program of the U.S. Department of State. Please note that new U.S. Department of State regulations for the J-1 Visa Trainee and Intern Categories will be in effect as of July 19, 2007, that revise significantly the regulations that previously governed this program. Responsibilities of:

• Submit complete application to university or program contact at least 4 months prior to desired program start date

• Pay $1,000 program fee
• Pay CISI insurance fee of $40 per month (plus one additional month for travel time). Click here for information about purchasing insurance through CDS International
• Attend appointment at a local U.S. Consulate and pay the Consular and SEVIS fees. For more information, please click here.
• Find housing in the U.S. (CDS will provide tips)
• Arrange and pay for your flight to and from the United States
• Participate in phone interviews, if requested by host company
• Represent your home country in a responsible way

• Collaborate with partner contact to customize program
• Locate internship position
• Evaluate and help students with application, including drafting of American-style resume
• Arrange insurance, if requested
• Provide and review all J-1 Visa application documents and requirements, including Form DS-2019
• Work with Host Company to develop training plan (U.S. government requirement)
• Conduct orientation seminar upon arrival in the United States
• Provide support throughout the program in home country and the United States

• Designate a university staff member as a main contact for CDS
• Collaborate with CDS to pick an appropriate group start date
• Make USAIP information and program materials available to students
• Ensure a minimum number of qualified students apply for each start date
• Provide pre-departure information
