This program facilitates internships in the U.S. for international and Canadian co-op students under the auspices of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program of the U.S. Department of State. All applicants must be evaluated by a faculty advisor at the institution where they are enrolled prior to acceptance into the program.

This program is administered under the auspices of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program of the U.S. Department of State. Please note that new U.S. Department of State regulations for the J-1 Visa Trainee and Intern Categories will be in effect as of July 19, 2007 that revise significantly the regulations that previously governed this program. Responsibilities of:


Participant:
  • Secure an internship position with a company in the U.S. For tips on finding training positions, visit our resources page.
  • Submit a complete CDS application along with all required program fees and health insurance fees (US$40 per month)
  • Pay SEVIS fee of $100.
  • Schedule J-1 visa interview appointment at the home-country U.S. Embassy or Consulate (not applicable to Canadian citizens)
  • Confirm arrival in the U.S. and participate in a CDS orientation
  • Complete mid-term and final reports during internship in the U.S.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to secure a practical training position with a company in the US and to locate housing.
Co-op Faculty Advisor:
  • Conducts an evaluation of the applicant to assess motivation, skills, and eligibility for internship in the United States
Host Company:
  • Provides internship/training position
  • Complete Training/Internship Placement Plan outlining scope and content of participant's internship/training program and provide information on organization including a Dun & Bradstreet number, a Tax Identification Number (EIN), as well as verification of Workman's Compensation Insurance Policy
  • Pay program fee (if applicable)
  • Monthly compensation is negotiable between host company and intern/trainee
CDS International:
  • Evaluate qualifications and program eligibility of participants and host organizations including site visits to host organizations that have not previously participated in a CDS training or internship program and that do not meet the threshold of having more than 25 employees or more than $3 million in annual revenue
  • Coordinate completion of Training/Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002) with U.S. host organization and participant
  • Issue Form DS-2019 – document required for J-1 Exchange Visitor visa application
  • Conduct orientation for participants
  • Analyze and assess State Department-mandated reports on the internship program
  • Arrange required enrollment in health and accident insurance for the duration of the program
  • Provide on-going program support monitoring the progress and welfare of the participants

Application


All submitted applications should include:
  • CDS Application
  • Application fee of U.S. $750
  • Copy of your valid passport - should be valid for 6 months beyond intended internship end date
  • Copy of previous US non-tourist visas (if applicable)
  • CISI insurance fee of $40 per month plus one additional month for travel time
  • Your resume
  • Recent official transcript or unofficial transcript with your University Co-op Advisor’s signature
  • You must also have an interview with your Co-op advisor who can attest to the importance of this internship for your studies and evaluate your skills. Please have your advisor submit the Interview Results Form (.pdf) directly to CDS.
  • Your host company must submit a Training/Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002) to CDS, which outlines the course of training that is intended for your internship.
  • As a J-1 visa holder, you are also required to attend an orientation given by CDS International. More information regarding the orientation will be sent to you along with your DS-2019 form (formerly IAP-66).
