My America

In 2006, CDS hosted the first-ever My America contest which invited CDS participants on the U.S. State Department J-1 Visitor Exchange Program to submit a photo or written essay about their experiences in the U.S. The winner in each category received a $1,000 travel voucher from STA Travel to be used for an international flight.

The My America contest challenged participants to artistically express their impressions of U.S. Participants were asked to address a variety of topics that best articulated their thoughts and feelings about America, its people, and its culture. In addition to exhibiting unique views of America through foreign eyes, the contest was designed to provide CDS and Americans insight into experiences abroad in the U.S. as well as deepen intercultural understanding.

The inaugural My America contest was a great success! CDS received entries that were creatively written and designed; some photo essays were assembled through different mediums, among them: calendars, homemade photo albums, and PowerPoint Presentations. Contestants were given complete freedom of expression-they addressed topics of American politics, people, culture, the company where they were trained, and the town where they lived. Prominent figures in the government and media were invited to be judges. Originality of idea and unique insight into the U.S. were 2 of several key criteria in the judging process.

The winners of both the My America Written Essay and Photo Essay are listed below. There, you can view their creative work as well as check out the 20 top finalists in the photo essay category.
