Frequently Asked Questions

When should I arrive in the U.S.?

CDS WEST participants for Round 4 must plan to arrive in the U.S. on or before August 24, 2010. Orientation in New York and English language placement tests at Hunter IELI will take place August 25–27.

May I intern outside New York City?

Internships outside the New York City area are possible for CDS WEST participants and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We will take into account your education, experience, and goals, as well as likelihood of securing an appropriate internship for you in New York City.

May I find my own internship?

Your active participation in the internship placement process is very important; however, CDS as sponsor has a responsibility to oversee the process. Further information about how you can participate will be provided to you once you are accepted to CDS WEST and arrive in the U.S.

How do I know whether my internship will be paid or unpaid?

WEST participants should be aware that unpaid internships are common in the U.S. Therefore, the Korean Council on University Education provides funding to help offset participants’ living expenses.

May I travel while participating in CDS WEST?

Yes! You may travel in the U.S. as a CDS WEST participant; we encourage you to explore the wide variety of people and places the U.S. has to offer. However, your travel must not conflict with your language studies, internship search, or responsibilities to your host company. Trips may be taken on weekends and on official holidays. You will also have a 30-day travel period at the end of your program.

May I travel internationally while participating in CDS WEST?

International travel is possible at the discretion of CDS; however, you must consult CDS before you make plans and purchase international flight tickets. Travel must not interfere with the goals of the WEST program: to enhance your English skills and knowledge of U.S. business practices and culture.

Please note that you must obtain a travel signature from CDS on Form DS-2019 in order to travel internationally. CDS will share more information about this at your orientation.

May I find my own housing in New York?

You are welcome to find your own housing in New York, as most past CDS WEST participants have chosen to do. All participants are responsible for making their own housing arrangements; CDS offers the options at Sara’s Homestay and EHS as a courtesy. If you plan to take advantage of Sara’s Homestay or EHS, please be sure to book as soon as possible after you are accepted to the program, as limited space is available. Participants who plan to find their own housing in New York are required to secure temporary housing prior to arriving in the U.S. to cover their first two weeks in New York: August 24–September 6.
