Intern / Train in USA
USA Internship Program
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to apply for the J-1 visa through a sponsorship organization?
Yes, in order to participate in the J-1 visa program you must have a U.S. Department of State designated sponsor. The sponsor screens candidates and host companies, issues the legal documentation needed to get the J-1 visa, and provides support throughout the program. CDS has been designated an official sponsor of the J-1 visa in the intern and trainee categories.
When should we begin the J-1 visa application process?
The sooner the better! We suggest starting the J-1 visa application two months before the desired internship start date. CDS processes complete applications within five business days and also offers Express Service for even faster turn-around. However, delays may occur at other points in the process, such as when scheduling a consular interview, so it is best to allow for waiting time.
How do I begin the application process?
Begin by completing an Application Request form in the Learn More & Apply section of our website. You will be asked to provide basic information about yourself and your host company. Once you have submitted the Application Request form, a CDS staff member will contact you within 1-2 business days about how to complete the application.
My internship dates have not yet been confirmed. What start and end dates should I enter on the application?
Give the best approximate start and end dates that you expect to be at your host company. You may change your internship dates at any time during the application; however, they may not be changed once you are issued Form DS-2019.
My passport expires less than six months after my program is scheduled to end. Is this acceptable?
No, please note that your passport must be valid at least six months past your program end date.
Can I submit a university transcript/diploma in a language other than English?
No. Please upload either a certified translation of these documents or a letter from your university on official university letterhead stating in English the dates for which you were enrolled and any degrees you received.
I have not taken an English language proficiency exam or attended an English language school. How should I show my English proficiency?
You can show proof of your proficiency in English during the phone interview you will have with a CDS representative.
I would like my paperwork to be sent to an address other than the one listed on my application. How should I indicate this?
Unless notified otherwise, CDS will send your paperwork to the address that you marked as “preferred” on your online application. If you would like documentation to be sent to a different address, notify your CDS representative.
I am married and/or have children. Can my dependents come with me to the United States?
Yes, legal dependents may come with you; however, they must apply for a J-2 visa. CDS can sponsor your dependents for this visa. Please let your CDS representative know as soon as possible if your spouse or children will be coming with you.
Do I need to purchase IEES insurance?
Yes, all CDS J-1 interns/trainees who are not applying through one of our partner organizations must purchase IEES insurance through CDS. This is to ensure that all U.S. Department of State regulations are met.
When will CDS contact me for the phone interview?
After you have submitted your online application, a staff member will contact you to schedule a phone interview, typically within one business day.
When will I be able to schedule my consular appointment?
Once CDS has issued Form DS-2019, you will receive an email containing your DS-2019 number. You may then schedule an appointment with a U.S. Consulate.
Are there any additional fees?
In addition to the fees you have paid CDS, you should expect to pay a fee to the U.S. Consulate for your interview appointment. This fee must be paid prior to your visit to the consulate.
Whom should I contact if I have problems with my online application?
Contact your CDS representative at any time with questions related to the application process.
Must I demonstrate access to financial resources in order to qualify for a J-1 visa?
Yes, you must provide proof of funds at your consular appointment. A bank statement will usually fulfill this requirement. Applicants should have at least US$2,000 in personal funds to cover up-front expenses. Additionally, the stipend at your internship (if any) and your personal funds should add up to at least US$1,500 per month for the duration of your program.
