Background on Schott
SCHOTT is a leading international company whose base products are special glass and glass ceramics for industrial, scientific and consumer applications. The company defines its main goal in innovating new products using special materials, components and systems in order to improve living and working conditions. SCHOTT's high-tech materials are particularly used in the household appliances industry, pharmaceuticals, optics, lighting and solar.
Its many production and sales companies employ about 17,000 people in more than 36 different countries. Headquartered in Germany, SCHOTT operates in close proximity to its customers through sales companies in all its major markets. SCHOTT works with more than 150 partners from universities, institutes and industrial undertakings in Germany and other countries.
SCHOTT especially focuses on the continuing support for employees' technical, management and interpersonal skills. More than 600 SCHOTT employees are involved in research and development worldwide. One third of these in the Otto Schott Research Center in Mainz, the most up-to-date glass research unit in Europe.
One of SCHOTT's most famous technological achievements was the innovation of Ceran ® cooktop panels in 1972, which have left an incredible mark on the field of cooking worldwide. Another technological milestone was the development of Zerodur ® glass ceramics, enabling a new generation of large telescope mirrors for astronomy.
The "Glastechnische Laboratorium Schott & Genossen" (later to become Jenaer Glaswerk) was established in 1884 by the company's founder, Otto Schott, who laid the foundations for the modern glass industry. Due to the Soviet occupation in 1948 the original factory in Jena was expropriated and converted into a publicly owned corporation. With the reunification of Germany, Schott Glaswerke of Mainz took over the ownership of Jenaer Glaswerke and the rivalry between the two leading firms -- one from the east and one from the west part of Germany -- was overcome.
